Saving America's Horses Alert! There has Not been a Retraction by the BLM

Direct questions to BLM head are ignored. Recommendation to destroy unadoptable wild horses and burros is left in place.

On Sept 20, 2016, Saving America's Horses contacted the head of the BLM raising questions regarding the recommendation to kill 45,000 wild horses and burros. 

We asked: 

• If they had rejected last week's recommendation for mass extermination of America's captured wild horses and burros; 

• If wild horses and burros on the range are also in danger of mass extermination;

• For their confirmation that they will not use euthanasia as a means to manage America's wild horse and burro population;

• If captured BLM horses and burros will be subjected to sale authority or the possibility of going to slaughter.

Instead of answering our questions they reaffirmed the following recommendation and told us their talking points.

"BLM should follow stipulations of WHB Act by offering all suitable animals in long and short term holding deemed unadoptable for sale without limitation or humane euthanasia. Those animals deemed unsuitable for sale should then be destroyed in the most humane manner possible.—Approved"

This PSA features grand jury evidence of BLM horses going to slaughter as presented in the international award winning documentary, Saving America's Horses: A Nation Betrayed. “Filled with facts… Saving America’s Horses details the corrupt and negligent practices surrounding the slaughter of over 100,000 horses a year. Special censure is reserved for the Bureau of Land Management’s apparent brief against wild horses and the dismantling a protective 1971 government act.” —  NY TIMES

Saving America's Horses warns the public, "Don't be duped" by misleading headlines and propaganda. America's horses are NOT out of danger.

Reuters: 
“BLM spokesperson, Tom Gorey, said in an email that the agency will continue its current policy of caring for unadopted or unsold wild horses and burros and will not sell or send any animals to slaughter."
“BLM is expected to formally respond to the panel at its next meeting within months.”

TRANSLATION: The fate of 45,000 Wild Horses and Burros remains under threat of extermination pending a formal BLM decision, after its next meeting, TBA spring 2017.

Huffington Post:
“The BLM will issue a formal response at the next board meeting in spring 2017."
“Despite the recommendation, the BLM will not euthanize or sell without limitation any healthy animals, agency spokeswoman Courtney Whiteman told The Huffington Post in an email.

TRANSLATION:  Selling the animals ‘without limitation’ or under sale authority effectively strips their protection from abuse and slaughter. And since BLM fails to enforce its sale authority policy, countless wild horses and burros remain in danger.

Fox News:
“…we will continue with our current policy, BLM said.”

TRANSLATION: Countless wild horses and burros may continue to be killed under BLM status quo practices.

The Arizona Republic:
“BLM: We do not 'and will not euthanize' wild horses.”

TRANSLATION: The BLM uses a variety of other methods to kill wild horses.

ProPublica: The U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sold 1,700 captured wild Mustangs to a known kill buyer by the name of Tom Davis, who purchases horses and ships them for slaughter in Mexico. BLM approved the sales to Davis, (who also works as a livestock hauler out of La Jara, Colorado) under the guise that Davis would sell the horses for use in movies in Mexico. Reportedly the BLM began shipping “truckloads and truckloads” of horses to Davis after his neighbor and business associate, Ken Salazar, became Interior Secretary in 2009. Salazar, a fifth-generation rancher, is heavily criticized for his involvement supporting the removal of Mustangs from public lands to make room for livestock grazing. Wild horses are additionally supposed to be protected by appropriations language, passed annually by Congress, which prohibits the BLM from selling captured wild horses for slaughter.

TRANSLATION: BLM wild horses and burros, sadly, do go to slaughter.

America’s horses are NOT protected and they are NOT out of danger.

Saving America’s Horses Warns the Public Not to Let Down Guard for America’s Horses

America’s Wild Horses and Burros are NOT Out of Danger

Sept. 16, 2016, Los Angeles, CA - Fate of 44,000 Wild Horses remains under Threat of EXTERMINATION pending BLM decision TBA spring 2017. Meanwhile status quo BLM practices leave horses with no real protection from killing or slaughter.

The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) neither approves nor rejects recommendation by its Board to exterminate 44,000 wild American horses.  A number of recent media reports have essentially renounced valid concerns which threaten the lives of over 45,000 wild horses and burros in America.  In truth, the BLM has yet to decide the fate these innocent animals.  Reportedly the BLM has no intention of issuing a formal response on the issue until sometime in 2017.

Saving America’s Horses, an international initiative under the Wild For Life Foundation points to the BLM’s long history of creative damage control and propaganda campaigns when confronted with public exposure and uproar over its highly camouflaged wild horse and burro program.   “The BLM claims to protect the wild horses and burros under a so-called “without limitation” policy which they fail to enforce,” said Katia Louise, president of the Wild For Life Foundation.  Amidst the media flurry, it’s been reported that Tom Gorey, a spokesman for the bureau said that the agency will “continue its current policy of caring for unadopted or unsold wild horses and burros” and will “not sell or send any animals to slaughter.”

“To sell the animals ‘without limitation’ effectively strips their protection from abuse and slaughter,” adds Katia Louise.  “In other words, countless wild horses and burros will continue to die under BLM status quo practices.”

Despite mainstream news reports, America’s horses are not out of danger, said Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) representatives.   Saving America’s Horses is therefore stepping up its educational campaign in effort to increase exposure of the truth to the public. In a statement from WFLF’s Saving America’s Horses Initiative, “We will be strengthening our fight to stop the killing, end the cruelty and save America’s horse and burro population from suffering gruesome death from roundups and slaughter.”  On Sept. 14, 2016, The Wild For Life Foundation, announced its release of a new series of PSA's based on evidence presented in the powerful documentary film, Saving America's Horses: A Nation Betrayed (2012, 2016)

With over 44,000 innocent wild American Mustangs lives at stake, and under what is now recognized as a valid veiled threat of EXTERMINATION by the BLM, it's critical for these innocent beings that the true facts get out to the masses. WFLF is asking horse and animal enthusiasts to help stop the dangerous and violent expulsion of America’s Mustangs from our lands by taking action. Supporters are encouraged to sign the Saving America’s Horses’ petition and join the Saving America’s Horses Initiative.  Through these efforts we will expose the systemic corruption that has left virtually worthless the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act, which is supposed to protect horses and burros. There are over 200 million acres of rangelands in the U.S. where these horses could roam freely, but they are quickly being eliminated by the same governmental agencies that claim to protect them.
