Open Letter with Comments, Concerns and Proposals by WFLF and ISAGC Re Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Management

Open letter to BLM & USFS Re WFLF & ISAHC Comments, Concerns and Proposals Re Montgomery Pass Wild Horse Management

To:

BLM and USFS

From:

Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF)

International Saving America’s Horses Coalition (ISAHC)

WFLF & ISAHC Comments, Concerns & Proposal(s)

Given the fact that there are roughly 200,000 acres in the MPWHT, we are extremely concerned that the MPWHT has an assigned allowable population of only 138 - 230 wild horses, (a mean of just 184 horses). Based on the same, the BLM and USFS would only allow one individual horse for every 1,087 acres, or 1.7 square miles. This is both absurd and contrary to the management goals and duties of the BLM and USFS.

Given the current estimated population of 654 horses, there are roughly 306 acres, or 0.48 square miles per individual wild horse. This population is therefore well within the established horse carrying capacity of moderate horse density in relation to available forage, water & shelter.

Per the proposed Wild Horse Management for MPWHT,  (https://fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/landmanagement/resourcemanagement/?cid=fseprd1145518 ) the BLM and USFS overly simplify consideration of this legally protected herd. Further, there is absolutely no evidence to support the assertion that wild horses are destructive presences wherever they live.

The BLM and USFS proposal further lack any alternatives to address the purported disturbances. WFLF and ISAHC experts have studied and visited the warm springs on the east shore of Mono Lake, including the high-use recreation areas such as Navy Beach and South Tufa, and have closely observed the mustangs around Montgomery Pass.  Moreover, factual evidence clearly demonstrates that there are scant bands with very little negative impact.

The BLM and USFS have failed to consider the heavy snow last winter which created a natural emergency for the wild horses. As such, the horses were forced to seek areas where they could survive.  We have yet to discover any attempt by the BLM and USFS to help the horses during this natural emergency.

This natural emergency does not provide any justification for the proposed reduction and or elimination of this important wild horse population. Further, per Sections 4 & 6 of WFHBA, Cooperative Agreements can be established with adjacent land management agencies and, or private landowners to provide all the year-round habitat requirements. Further, per the WFHBA, it is the agency’s legal duty to manage a sustainable and viable wild horse population; not to eliminate them.

Further, the BLM and USFS have failed to recognize the benefits of the wild horses’ daily & seasonal movements that, in fact, support the ecosystem through the constitution of natural rest-rotation which allows the various sectors of their habitat to rebound. Substantial scientific evidence documents how the broad-ranging, semi-nomadic nature of the horses supports the ecosystem.

Per the Wild Free-Roaming Horses & Burros Act they must be allowed to live naturally and freely and with minimum interference. Per the Act, they must be allowed to fulfill their natural niche and role in the ecosystem. BLM and USFS are actually in violation of this law by not working in favor of the herd, and by restricting, confining and removing them based on falsehoods and fabricated excuses.

Substantial scientific evidence has proven that wild horses are deeply rooted returned native species in North America. This fact is further demonstrated by fossil and petroglyphs found in the MPWHT. If there is merit to the suggested concerns of noticeable disturbance or conflict with visitors or traffic, it is the agency’s duty to develop and manage a protective plan that both mitigates & prevents the same.

We propose that BLM and USFS create alternative watering sources and natural shelter areas that are away from the extreme weather patterns including any heavy snowstorms & blizzards & cold weather.  We further propose the construction of fencing and or other artificial barriers. For example, overpasses can be constructed at strategic locations along highways, and vivid traffic signs including speed control can easily be implemented. We further suggest the installation of speed control bumps which would be highly effective in slowing motorists down in specific areas.

Wild horses can be easily conditioned through both positive reinforcement & safe and humane negative reinforcement to stay away from sensitive habitats & areas of possible conflict. These safe and humane methods have been successfully implemented with other large wild animals including elephants, rhinos & zebras to prevent conflicts in farmland and human dwelling areas, as well as sensitive habitats.

We further propose that any plans to roundup and remove any wild horses from the MPWHT be canceled immediately, and that these management methods be instead implemented by the BLM and USFS. It’s important to additionally point out that these management methods would be far less expense to conduct than roundups, etc., which are in fact, far more destructive to the environment.

Per the WFHBA, wild horses & burros contribute to the diversity of life forms within the nation and enrich the lives of the American people. Further, a wild horse/burro range, or legal area, is the amount of land necessary to sustain an existing herd or herds of wild free-roaming horses and burros and should be devoted principally but not necessarily exclusively to their welfare and be considered an integral part of the natural system of public lands.

Wild horses naturally build healthy, humus rich soils and disperse many intact seeds of a great variety of plants including many native species. They can and will naturally adapt to their ecosystem in harmonious ways that enhance the environment if allowed.

Mario James was the man behind the Mission of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES at WFL Humanion Films. He was a devoted supporter of the Wild For Life Foundation and its mission to prevent animal cruelty, end horse slaughter, and save and protect horses & burros in need. His humanity shined in his devotion to his wife and family, and the labor of love work for his revered horse family. Mario was also a loving and devoted son-in-law, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and caring friend. He was there when fire threatened the sanctuary and risked his own safety, he was there when neighbors and friends needed help in their rural community, he was there to help care for his mother-in-law, and served as the rock on which everyone could always depend. Mario was a Treasured Spirit Peaceful Warrior Brother and Elder of the Horse Nation, with a HEART as BIG as a HERD! Mario's FIRE and PASSION to take care of one of CREATOR'S MOST MAJESTIC BEINGS with utmost LOVE, GENTLENESS AND CARING was boundless and selfless. He made sure they had a voice and a perpetual home and did everything in his power to ensure they were well cared for.

But the heart of the man with the heart of gold suddenly stopped beating in the morning of February 4th. And now we at Saving America's Horses, Wild For Life Foundation and Lifetime Equine Refuge are faced with the reality that our kind, gentle and sensitive man who gave his all to those in his care, are grieving through the experience his sudden loss and the rescue horses & burros who reside at our humble equestrian sanctuary are facing life without our sanctuary manager, their caregiver and support for their essential daily needs.

Mario’s family is grieving through the shocking experience of his traumatic loss, and has set up a special memorial fund to honor his lifesaving work through the Wild For Life Foundation charity. WFLF Study Reveals Disturbing Number of U.S. Thoroughbreds Slaughtered Each Year

Oct. 31, 2022

In 2012 the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) released a Case Study conducted on the number of Thoroughbreds that die at slaughter annually.  Based on data published by the U.S. government and the Jockey Club in the years 2002 – 2010, it was reported that an amount equal to 70% of the annual Thoroughbred foal crop, on average, die at slaughter each year.

The findings represent a detailed portrait of the U.S. Thoroughbreds slaughtered in the years 2002 through 2010, as compared to annual Thoroughbred foal crop.

The case study is based on data published by the U.S. government and the Jockey Club. According to the study, an amount equal to 70% of the annual Thoroughbred foal crop, on average, die at slaughter each year.

“The polls have shown that the vast majority of those in racing want an end to the transport of their horses to any slaughterhouse,” said Jo Anne Normile, founder of Saving Baby Equine Charity and CANTER, the first organization to take Thoroughbreds right from the track to safe havens. “But for every Secretariat, for every Seabiscuit, there are tens of thousands of racehorses whose experiences on the back lots of the country’s tracks tell a different story.”

“As more race tracks scramble to implement programs to protect thoroughbreds at the end of their careers, it is important to remember that this same horrible fate is imposed on many that never have a racing career.” — Shelley Abrams, Racehorse Owner, Co Founder Americans Against Horse Slaughter.

“Without federal protection, aftercare programs cannot safeguard our horses from the harm of horse slaughter,” adds Katia Louise, President Wild for Life Foundation. “It’s evident that much more must be done by the industry, including a united stance supporting a federal ban on slaughter of horses for human consumption.”

Wild for Life Foundation extends an open invitation to the members of the Thoroughbred industry to join the Saving America’s Horses Initiative for the protection of all horses from slaughter. Members of the Thoroughbred industry can help champion the way by supporting an anti-slaughter position in  their communities and by  supporting the legislative bills that protect all America’s horses from slaughter.

As part of the initiative, “Saving America’s Horses” is spotlighting the issue through the world's most powerful visual resource, cinema. SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED, is a brilliant
landmark feature film that sends a life-changing message to the public about the need to protect our horses.

SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED
The 2022 release of SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED has been announced!  Get updates about the release, how to watch & take part on opening day!

"SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED is a sobering wake up call to the need for all horsemen and horsewomen to do more to ensure that our beloved horses are protected. I urge the leaders in the Thoroughbred industry to set an example for the rest of the industry to actively get behind this film and support the legislation that will put an end to horse slaughter" — Bing Bush Jr., equine attorney

"SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES is so important to shed light on the reality of what is happening to our horses everyday in this country. My hope is that every horse lover will come away with a whole new understanding of why we have to protect these magnificent animals after seeing the film" says Nick Zito, Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer.

Founded in 2009, the SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES Coalition is an international alliance of equestrian professionals, veterinarians, equine welfare experts, humane education researchers, horse advocates, scientists, film and television artists, and concerned citizens working in concert to promote humane and sustainable wild horse and burros preservation with a focus on the prevention of equine cruelty and ending the slaughter of America's horses.

The Wild for Life Foundation and the Saving America’s Horses Coalition commends the progress that's been made over  the years toward an auditable aftercare program for rehabilitation, retraining and adoption for horses whose racing careers have ended. However, more must be done  in all racing jurisdictions and the industry must help generate more funds to assist in the transition of horses from racing into second careers. Together we further recommend that the leaders in the equine industry resolve to a vigorous showing of support for anti-slaughter legislation; to help put an end to the travesty and tragedy of horse slaughter for human consumption. Without Federal protection, racehorse aftercare programs cannot safeguard our horses from the cruelty and devastating harm of horse slaughter.

Sharing a little Goodness for the Heart and Soul from Saving America's Horses, this Feel Good Friday

Welcome the Spirit of the Horse into Your Heart!

Like us, horses are social beings; they have strong family units (known as bands).

Research shows that there are many health benefits for people who spend quality time with horses; it reduces stress and alleviates anxiety, and even lowers blood pressure and heart rate.

Horses help build confidence. They do not judge nor blame.

Horses reflect back the emotions we feel inside, and by sharing their breath and welcoming their spirit into our heart we can become more aware of who we are, and how our behavior impacts others.

"May the healing hearts of horses help us discover and learn to nurture a compassionate reference for all life." - Katia Louise

Horses & burros heal our hearts and can heal our lands!

Wild equids are keystone herbivores in our failing ecosystems, and wildfire fuel reducers. Their presence in the wild helps to slow climate change via a reduction in CO2 emissions from catastrophic wildfires. In the United Kingdom and other parts of the world, entire rangelands are successfully being rejuvenated through the return of wild equids in conservation grazing.

Feel Good Fridays with good news and uplifting messages for the heart and soul. Finding balance with blessings of light and harmony through healing & compassion ~ from the team at SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES.

Action Alert Part Three: Safe Act at Risk

Through Unity We Can Reset the Course of History

We must act now. There's no time to lose.

This Action Alert explores the involvement in horse slaughter and roundup activities on both federal and tribal lands by American Tribes, the impact of those activities on Tribal people, Tribal horses, and BLM horses of today, and actions we can take as one nation of people to protect the Horse Nation going forward.

Per USDA APHIS, the National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC) has been distributing information pushing support for roundups and horse slaughter to their congressional delegations, and this has been going on for well over a decade.  As illustrated in their May 26, 2022, letter to the Committee Working on the Safe Act, they are adamantly opposed to the anti-slaughter legislation.  More importantly is the impact of their letter and the fact that their letter is filled with misrepresentations, falsehoods, and innuendo.

If you didn’t know any better, you would likely believe that horse slaughter and round ups are activities widely needed and supported by American Tribal people. However, as shall be illustrated in this Action Alert, nothing could be further from the truth.

Similar letters dated on the exact same day and submitted to the Committee, from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) claim that their entire member base is opposed to a ban of horse slaughter, and that horse slaughter is needed, and that it’s humane. Again, nothing could be further from the truth.  Yet the NTHC and other slaughter proponents rest a large part of their case on the misrepresentations distributed by the AVMA and the AAEP.

United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), employees began meeting with Tribal representatives in the Northwest region of the U.S. in 2008-2009. Janet Wintermute, a USDA APHIS employee began working with the NTHC to prepare persuasive written information that would promote horse slaughter, roundups and sterilization activities including the use of GonaCon.  The NTHC reportedly incorporated in 2008-2009, and they have been meeting with USDA APHIS employees every other month since then.

It’s important to note that, per the USDA APHIS, employees of Federal Agencies such as the USDA APHIS, are explicitly forbidden from lobbying Congress on legislative initiatives. However, substantial evidence has surfaced through investigations by WFLF SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES, showing that the USDA APHIS employees have been manipulating America’s Tribal Leaders, and pressuring them to challenge federal laws that prevent federal agencies from inspecting horse meat that could be sold for human consumption.

In 2009, the USDA APHIS, and the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) targeted the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and together they held a joint conference and established a pro-slaughter resolution which remains an active NCAI policy today.

The next year, in 2010, WFLF SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES was contacted by Elder, Spiritual Leader, David Swallow of the Lakota Nation with a statement that their sacred horses were being confiscated and they were being arrested if they did not cooperate.  David had called us, very distraught. He could hardly speak. He said it was an attack on the People and an attack on the Innocence of the Sacred Horses of the First Nations People. There was an injunction filed in court, but it was denied.

In the statement by David Swallow he wrote, "This is a Reservation. We are NOT living in a park or a National park. It is the land of the People. We already have the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Police, the Oglala Sioux Tribal (OST) Public Safety Law Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Marshals watching over us. I believe we Lakota Oyate have enough jurisdiction watching over us. Now come the Oglala Sioux Park Rangers, confiscating our Sacred Horses and arresting us if we don't cooperate. The Oglala Sioux Park Rangers are selling our horses to local ranchers (who then sell them to slaughterhouses) or the OST Rangers sell our horses directly to slaughter houses. THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED AND OUR Sacred Horses returned back to the People."

WFLF SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES published David Swallow's Complete Statement and Press Release the next day.  Sadly, the horses were scheduled to be sold for slaughter on Mother’s Day of all Days.

David had asked for people to speak their hearts and to flood lawmaker's emails with protests. "This is something that we must do as a nation of people standing together on behalf of the horse nation," added Katia Louise.

David also added, "Our protests are filled with the tears of the Generations of Lakota's who have been abused not only by the White Society, but now by their own Tribal Government again."

Since then, there have been numerous roundups of tribal horses on reservation lands using U.S. taxpayer dollars. Time and time again, the tribal people were arrested if they did not cooperate with the confiscation of their beloved horses.

Perhaps the most brutal, and widely publicized roundups on Tribal lands in recent history were the Navajo Nation roundups.  Wild for Life Foundation broke the news on September 10, 2013, that Navajo Nation Government Rangers were Storming Private Properties, Searching & Seizing Horses in New Mexico. The large-scale Navajo Nation (NN) Government roundup of wild horses was conducted despite strong opposition from many Navajo tribal people.

Local tribal members reported government rangers coming onto their property and confiscating virtually every horse, even from within their stalls and pens. We received reports of  dozens or orphan foals that had been left stranded after their mothers were shipped to slaughter. We also received reports from families whose children witnessed their family horses, burros and little ponies being chased off cliffs by the rangers.

The Navajo Elders issued a declaration saying, “We strongly urge the Navajo Nation and U.S. Government, Bureau of Indian Affairs, DOI, USDA, to stop the desecration and destruction of the Diné Way of Life and Spiritual Foundation by recklessly promoting and supporting the roundup and mass execution of our relative, the horse.” The Nohooka Dine' published a Resolution in opposition of the roundups.

As part of a larger pattern, just two weeks before, a strikingly similar roundup to the one occurring on the Navajo reservation took place on the Fort McDermitt Paiute Shoshone Reservation in Nevada. Critics viewed the roundup as part of a wider campaign endorsed by the Obama Administration. President Obama’s appointment of Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior, which oversees the BLM, together with the U.S. Forest Service, continued to conduct scores of roundups across 12 Western U.S. states resulting in the capture and eradication of countless wild horses.

The Navajo Government justified the eradication of its sacred Navajo horses by mimicking USDA, BLM and livestock industry assertions that the horses are supposedly “destroying the lands”; however, as stated by President Shelly during The 2012 Navajo State of the Nation, he admits that "other livestock grazing, not horse grazing is to blame..." “Our specialists have said sand dunes are growing and the land is being overgrazed. For example, we have nearly 170,000 sheep in Fort Defiance Agency, while our land can only support about 7,800 sheep.” These facts are just the tip of the iceberg. The NN Department of Agriculture estimates that the Navajo range is overrun with domesticated livestock by more than 40 percent.

In 2014, the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation halted a planned roundup of 3000-4000 wild horses from across their reservation due to the overwhelming objection to the roundup by their Tribal Members. Sadly, a total of 422 wild horses were removed before the roundup was stopped, and they were reportedly shipped to slaughter in Canada.

U.S. agency employees continue their efforts to influence & pressure tribal leaders to this present day.  For example, in 2021 it was reported that a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist by the name of Pat Hnilicka, advised the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes, to refer to wild horses, “as invasives, as weeds in a sense, because they … spread,” he said.

Although less publicized, the roundups on reservation lands have continued, and the situation has escalated. In 2021, the Wyoming Legislature passed a Bill allocating $500,000 from state general funds for efforts to manage wild horses in the state, including on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The new Wyoming Legislation enables the state to bill the federal government for the grazing of “trespassing horses”.  It also allows the Wyoming Attorney General to file a writ of Mandamus seeking to compel the federal government “to take action to remove excess wild horses as required under federal law from affected nonfederal lands". Plus it authorizes the governor to negotiate with federal and tribal officials to manage wild horses.

As of May 20, 2022, the Wind River Tribal officials said their government agencies already allocated $100,000 to remove wild horses under the new WY legislation, and that 1000 animals have already been removed and sold.

Most recently, the Chairmen of the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe, and the Colorado River Tribes requested BLM roundups on reservation land, after referring to donkeys as "pests and nuisance burros". Approximately 275 wild burros in the area have become the target of this BLM roundup.

The Wild For Life Foundation, (WFLF) and its SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES Initiative is voicing extreme concern over the government’s aggressive removal of wild horses and burros from their native lands, both federal and tribal.  Likewise, the ongoing manipulation of tribes by US government agencies and their employees must stop.

New polls show that 83% of American citizens oppose horse slaughter, and 74% oppose wild horse and burro roundups. A more detailed look at the issue indicates that most Native American people are also opposed to horse slaughter and roundups.

If the tribal people of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, can stand together against the roundup and slaughter of their horses, and succeed, other tribal people can too, and so can the nontribal people of America.

It’s time to stand as one Nation of people on behalf of the Horse Nation and bring these ruthless and barbaric government activities to an end once and for all.

In an effort to save, protect and preserve wild and domestic equines, as opposed to the promotion of horse slaughter and widespread roundups throughout the American West, Wild for Life Foundation’s President, Katia Louise is calling on members of the public who care about the horses to join in a united stance for the horses with Saving America’s Horses by going to www.savingamericashorses.org and clicking on the join button, which will help raise awareness and provide ongoing education on this critical issue. Ms. Louise says, “Making your voice heard will ultimately bring these unjust, cruel and barbaric practices to an end.”

Action Alert Part One: Safe Act at Risk

 September 24, 2022

America’s wild and domestic horses and burros need you now more than ever before.

20 years have passed since the first federal bill was introduced targeting a ban on

horse slaughter, and now it seems that the current bill is in trouble.

Just this week during a Committee Meeting, the Safe Act H.R.3355 (the current anti-slaughter bill) was omitted from the upcoming markup calendar, which means it may never make it to the house floor for a vote this session.

How did this happen?

It was just recently discovered that the Committee on Energy and Commerce had received letters from leaders of large member pro-slaughter organizations claiming strong opposition to the Safe Act by their member base.  Amongst groups sending letters was the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) and the National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC).

What the general public may not realize is that these groups have been proponents of the perverse slaughter trade for many years now. Still, the recent discovery of these letters and their contents have sent shockwaves across the country, especially for the animal loving community. The AVMA claims to be the official voice for the wellbeing of animals. They claim that horse slaughter is humane and that there is somehow a greater risk of animal suffering if horse slaughter were to be banned. The AAEP states their position is consistent with the AVMA.

Get the Truth. Know the Facts.

Horse slaughter is the one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse on this planet.
As exposed through the film, SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES A NATION BETRAYED, there is nothing humane about horse slaughter at all.

Per the Testimony Before the
US House of Representatives
Committee on the Judiciary
Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security Hearing on H.R. 6598, the Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act, July 31, 2008,

"Horse slaughter has never been considered by veterinary professionals to be a form of euthanasia. Congress and the general public must hear from veterinarians that horse slaughter is not and should not be equated with humane euthanasia. Rather, the slaughtering of horses is a brutal and predatory business that promotes cruelty and neglect." - Dr. Nicholas Dodman, Professor, Section Head and Program Director of the Animal Behavior Department of Clinical Sciences at Tufts' Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in North Grafton,
Massachusetts.

"There is nothing humane about horse slaughter. From transportation to the use of electric goads, from slippery blood-spattered floors to the clanging and hissing of the apparatus, from the pop songs on the radio to the cussing of the killers, from the sight of horses being killed by those awaiting their gruesome fate to incorrectly positioned and operated captive bolt guns, from the grimacing and paddling of the half dead horses to their bleeding out while semi-conscious, nothing is respectful, nothing is humane.  It's all about profit under the pretext of "animal welfare" - the only way to dispose of so-called "unwanted horses
" - yeah right, Nick Dodman.

Horse Slaughter Issue Updates:

Health Risks Associated with Consuming Horsemeat

Yes, TAINTED horsemeat in the International Food Chain is STILL a serious
HEALTH THREAT!

Various audits done after the 2016 EU ban of horsemeat originating from the U.S. have reportedly continued to reveal prohibited toxic contaminants, including carcinogenic substances on a repeated basis, regardless of whether slaughtered in Mexico or Canada. EU control mechanisms are insufficient & fraud is rampant system wide.

This should be a wakeup call to all Nations of people that consume horsemeat or that buy pet food containing horsemeat, or that care about animals.   Take note, the U.S. is not the only country that allows their equine population to be slaughtered for consumption after being treated with substances that are known to be lethal to humans.

Entertainment & Performance Horses

In 2012 the Wild For Life Foundation (WFLF) released a Case Study conducted on the number of Thoroughbreds that die at slaughter annually.  Based on data published by the U.S. government and the Jockey Club in the years 2002 – 2010, it was reported that an amount equal to 70% of the annual Thoroughbred foal crop, on average, die at slaughter each year. These facts caught the attention of some very prominent racehorse industry stakeholders which led to some significant and inspirational turnarounds from deep within the racehorse industry. Numerous former pro-slaughter groups and associations have since changed their positions and now support the anti-slaughter legislation.

There have also been record setting numbers of racehorses that have died on the tracks.  New protective measures have been implemented, together with programs to help prevent these catastrophic injuries and to help keep Thoroughbreds from going to slaughter. However, much more needs to be done. One thing we know for sure is that without federal protection, racehorse aftercare programs cannot safeguard our horses from the harm of horse slaughter.

No Horse or Burro in the U.S. is Safe from Slaughter

U.S. horses of every breed, age and gender get sent to Mexico and suffer horrific cruelty.  They are also still sent to Canada where they suffer horrific cruelty, plus prolonged suffering from agonizing injuries that are left untreated for another six months after they enter the slaughter pipeline in the U.S.

The LAST 1.3% of America’s Wild Horses & Burros are Facing their Last Stand Right Now!

America's wild horse & burro population has declined by more than 96% since the turn of the 19th century. Yet the BLM intends to aggressively reduce their presence in the wild to less than 98%.

Without an actual census in over 50 years, the BLM claims that there are around 90,000 too many wild horses and burros on the public lands. Based on the same, they have accelerated their cruel helicopter roundups this year.   Without protective intervention, the BLM intends to continue conducting their aggressively cruel roundups while at the same time implementing a combination of barbaric ovariectomies and permanent chemical sterilization activities, plus they are without a doubt sending wild horses and burros to slaughter. Protective Legislation is Long Overdue

Our Government as a whole, effectively LICENSES this CRIMINAL ANIMAL CRUELTY by continuing to allow the export of U.S. horses & burros for slaughter.

But this can be stopped! Federal legislation such as the Safe Act can create a permanent ban on the slaughter of U.S. horses for food and prohibit their shipment abroad for that purpose. It's a bi-partisan issue and the passing of this legislation is long overdue.

Countless wild & domestic horses & burros have lost their lives to the insidious horse slaughter trade, and there’s no end in sight, unless we fight for their federal protection. We can’t bring back those who are gone, but we can prevent the suffering & killing of future generations by telling their story. You can help by standing united and making their voice heard!

~~~~~
It's been 10 years since Dr. Nicholas Dodman of SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES, joined together with Senator Landrieu, D-La., Rep. Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., and Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., to introduce the original Safe Act. The legislation if passed would have prohibited horse slaughter operations in the U.S., end the current export and slaughter of more America’s wild and domestic equines, and protect the public from consuming toxic horsemeat.
Per USDA Data, approximately 903,510 American horses & burros were killed in foreign slaughterhouses from June 2012 - June 2022. This number does not account for the untold number of wild horses and burros exported under false pretenses.
Looking back from the future… if you could make a difference right now, would you?
We created this banner for the horses & burros in 2012, and here we are looking back.  Before you know it, another decade will have passed and countless more horses & burros will have fallen victim to this barbaric trade, if we don't work together to protect them.
Act now! Please don’t let another minute slip by without making a difference for these innocent sentient beings, our four-legged brothers, and sisters, who have been there for us throughout the years. They need us now, more than ever, to protect them and keep them safe.
At WFLF we believe that unity happens when people put their differences aside and stand together for the greater good. This is how we roll at WFLF SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES.  We hope that you agree and are ready to take a stand or renew your pledge and stand united in effort to help stop horse slaughter today.
It’s up to ALL of US to Stand Up for what’s Right. Do what you can to help make a difference and do it as often as you can.
Lend Your Voice to the countless voiceless horses & burros in the U.S. and around the world. They need to be heard and the public needs to know the truth.
