"SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES - A NATION BETRAYED delivers a compelling case for the abolition of a cruel, archaic and predatory industry. "In 15 years, I have yet to hear one legitimate argument in favor of horse slaughter. Not one. I've sat through continuing education sessions and have been completely baffled at the complete untruths that are being told to veterinarians regarding both horse slaughter and the wild horses. I've been hearing these lies for 15 years now and they are what the veterinarians are basing their opinions on. This situation is so heartbreaking for our beloved horses. The horse slaughter industry is completely inhumane on so many levels not to mention what an unscrupulous industry it is as well. The industry represents everything that veterinarians are not supposed to be or do." - Dr. Lisa Jacobson

"My heart is broken and calls for this horrific travesty to STOP IMMEDIATELY! These Sacred Creations called Horse and Burro are integrated into our culture as Great Spirit's helpers for Indian peoples along with being teachers and Spiritual Medicine Keepers. It goes against ALL Natural Laws of Creator to slaughter horses and burros for human consumption worldwide!! AHO" - Chief Daniel "Eagle Warrior" Ramos, Chief Spiritual Leader, Choctaw Muskogee Yamassee Nation.

The 2022 Prelude Trailer from SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES features appearances by Paul Sorvino, Ken Wahl, George Knapp, Nicholas Dodman DVM, Nena Winand DVM, Elliot Katz DVM, Dr. Temple Grandin, Michael Blake, Chief Arvol Looking Horse, Craig Downer, John Holland, and Katia Louise, with new appearances by Sinikka Crosland, Lynley Edwards, Sioux Sarlis, Jay Coskie and Kora. Click to See & Share the SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES' Preview Showcase on Vimeo!

This monumental and pivotal body of work has raised the bar for animal welfare in the U.S., and united equine advocates globally. The film brings to screen facts about the imminent and urgent health risks to humans and the environmental impact caused by the capture, removal, transport, and stockpiling of both wild and domestic horses designated for the human food chain. The film exposes how certain government agencies and special interests groups run over existing laws that are meant to protect the horses, people and the environment.

SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES chronicles the history of needed protective legislation in the U.S., exposing the misleading propaganda used by proponents of slaughter, including the AVMA & the AAEP. It uncovers layers of documented evidence drawing a sharp contrast to the perverse myth that horse slaughter is “humane”, and that wrongly portrays this endangered native species as “excess, unwanted and destructive pests”.

Action Alert Part Two: Safe Act at Risk

Who is Behind the Current Push to Reopen Horse Slaughter in the U.S.?

Sept 30, 2022, This Action Alert explores the pro-slaughter influence and activities of the National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC), the USDA and the U.S. Department of Interior, and their ongoing push to reopen horse slaughter in the U.S.

As recently reported in our Action Alert: Part One -   Last week during a
Committee Meeting, the Safe Act H.R.3355 was essentially dropped from the upcoming markup calendar, and as a result it may never make it to the house floor for a vote this session. The Committee had received letters from leaders of large member pro-slaughter orgs claiming strong opposition to the bill by their member base. Amongst groups submitting letters was the National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC).

(See Action Alert Part One: Safe Act at Risk for information about the AVMA and AAEP letters and their contents.)

The National Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHCis a group that formerly called itself the Northwest Tribal Horse Coalition. It appears to be composed of five tribes including members of the Yakama and Colville tribes in Washington, the Umatilla and Warm Springs tribes in Oregon, and Shoshone Bannock in Idaho. The NTHC has been pushing  approval for a slaughterhouse at Warm Springs where live horses from the reservations and beyond could be slaughtered. The meat and carcasses would be processed for nonhuman consumption and disposal.

As revealed in documents from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal
and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS), these agencies have held numerous grass roots meetings for the purpose of getting tribes to distribute information about horse slaughter in the U.S. to their congressional delegations.

As indicated per USDA APHIS, at least 50 tribal and tribal-organization representatives have been targeted through the help of USDA’s Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Tribal Relations, Janie Hipp. And, to insure that invited tribal leaders can attend the USDA APHIS meetings, APHIS’ Veterinary Services (VS) provides the funding for them to take part.

The distribution of misinformation provided to tribes by USDA APHIS began several years ago and has made an indelible mark on some tribal leaders’ viewpoints.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), which has the overall Federal trust responsibility for managing reservation rangelands, had been working with one of the five Northwest Tribal Horse Coalition (NTHC) tribes to fund a feasibility study and business plan for a slaughterhouse in Oregon, but it reportedly did not pencil out.

It started with the NTHC (formerly known as Northwest Tribal Horse Coalition) which appears to represent a handful of tribes from the Northwest region of the US.  However, the movement was expanded through the help & the support of the DOI and USDA-APHIS.  In 2009, the DOI targeted the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) and together they held a joint conference and established a pro-slaughter resolution which remains the active policy today. Per their pro-slaughter resolution, the tribes of NCAI declares opposition to any/all anti horse slaughter acts and support for the DOI & USDA-APHIS' push to allow tribes to open horse slaughter plants within their jurisdiction

The back room deal between then Secretary of the US Department of Interior (DOI) Ken Salazar and the NCAI is revealed in the NCAI resolution.  The NCAI would accept  BIA funding from the DOI, specifically to manage the so-called overpopulation of horses. In turn the DOI/ Federal Government will support the NCAI Tribe's position opposing legislation that bans the slaughter of horses.

It's important to note that recent polls show that 83% of Americans oppose horse slaughter, and 74% oppose wild horse and burro roundups. Our research into the roundup of horses and burros on tribal lands shows that the majority of tribal people share the same view as the majority of non tribal people in the U.S.; they are adamantly opposed to the roundups and opposed to horse slaughter.

As we know, the leaders of governmental agencies, as well as large membership groups such as the AVMA, the AAEP and the NTHC, etc., oftentimes do not share, represent, or engage in activities that support the viewpoints and positions of the people they represent. None the less, they are able to control many things through the power that we, or former generations have invested them with.

Formidable power is held by those with grazing rights, and when you consider the political power and influence of the western livestock industry it may come as no surprise to find government issued data revealing persuasive agency tactics, such as threats, or creative forms of bribery or misrepresentation. Tribes that are involved in livestock grazing stand much to lose if they don’t go along with the BLM rangeland policies," - Katia Louise, president, Wild For Life Foundation.

As exposed through the documentary film, “SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES: A NATION BETRAYED”, Agriculture and Forestry have threatened tribes with a loss of livestock grazing permits if they fail to implement management policies. In a statement made for the Confederated Umatilla Journal, a newspaper of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation; Range, Agriculture and Forestry Program Manager Gordy Schumacher warns Tribes that grazing permits are at stake. “Without implementation of a management policy by the end of 2011, livestock grazing permits may have to be canceled,” says Schumacher.

"One of the biggest challenges in getting the truth out to the public is the constant misinformation propagated by supporters of horse slaughter and then circulated by the media," - Jay Coskie, VP Wild For Life Foundation. "Education founded on truth paints the real picture of history, and exposing the truth is what SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES is all about " - Katia Louise.

In an effort to save, protect and preserve wild and domestic equines, as opposed to the
promotion of horse slaughter and widespread roundups throughout the American West, Wild for Life Foundation’s President, Katia Louise is calling on members of the public who care about the horses to join in a united stance for the horses with Saving America’s Horses by going to www.savingamericashorses.org and clicking on the join button, which will continue to raise awareness and provide ongoing education on this critical issue. Ms. Louise says, “Making your voice heard will ultimately bring this unjust, cruel and barbaric practice to an end.”

You can help put an end to the horrific horse slaughter trade by acting right now. Please show your united support for the horses and burros today by sharing the true facts and information with your friends, your family, and by contacting your state & local government representatives

It’s up to ALL of US to Stand Up for what’s Right. Do what you can to help make a difference and do it as often as you can.

Dr. Nicholas Dodman – DVM, ACVA and ACVB, Co-Founder of Veterinarians for Equine Welfare (VEW)   "Congress and the general public must hear from veterinarians that horse slaughter is not and should not be equated with humane euthanasia. Rather, the slaughtering of horses is a brutal and predatory business that promotes cruelty and neglect."  – Doctor Dodmanworld a renown Board Certified Veterinary Behaviorist and Anesthesiologist, SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES Cast & Advisory Board, and one of our Nation’s most out spoken experts on the topic of horse slaughter.

Sir Paul Sorvino – Celebrated Director, Tony Award Nominated Actor & well respected Horse Advocate, and SAVING AMERICA’S HORSES Honorary Board.  Sir Paul Sorvino just recently passed away, but his powerful and compassionate voice against the slaughter of America's horses and burros will live on.  He was committed to helping to spread awareness about the evils of horse slaughter, and the BLM's insidious treatment of America's Mustangs.

Tippi Hedren – Golden Globe Awarded Actress, Animal Advocate, Founder The Roar Foundation's Shambala Preserve, SAVING AMERICA'S HORSES Honorary Board.  Tippi Hedren is the former New York fashion model who débuted in a starring role in Hitchcock's classic “The Birds” where she earned her Golden Globe award. Horses & Burros Heal our Hearts and Can Heal our Lands

Horses & Burros Heal our Hearts and Can Heal our Lands

America’s wild horses have been denied any genuine status or protection in the US. They have instead been labeled as “feral” and “invasive” which allows them to be legally harassed, shot, rounded up and hauled off to slaughter.

Horses and burros were previously thought to have disappeared from the continent roughly 10,000 years ago. However, a surmounting body of evidence confirms that horses never totally died out in America. Substantial evidence proves that the Equus species survived the ice age in America, and evidence of their continued presence has become too substantial to ignore.

Incontrovertible and indisputable fossil records and molecular biology evidence confirms that today’s Genus Equus (HORSES, BURROS and ZEBRAS) originated and co-evolved with the habitat of North America. Many people don’t even realize that the genus EQUUS, today’s horses and burros are GENETICALLY THE SAME as those that lived in the U.S. before their presumed extinction.

Why is this important? As a native species, wild horses and burros compliment the natural environment of North America. They are recognized by scientists all over the world for restoring rangelands, boosting biodiversity, and helping to the return of a wide variety of plants and invertebrates to the lands where they roam. Scientists and conservationists have indeed found that the re-introduction of wild equines to open lands is a positive way to restore ecosystems and wildlife.

Wild equids are keystone herbivores in our failing ecosystems, and wildfire fuel reducers. Their presence in the wild helps to slow climate change via a reduction in CO2 emissions from catastrophic wildfires. In the United Kingdom and other parts of the world, entire rangelands are successfully being rejuvenated through the return of wild equids in conservation grazing.
